Online Course Development Workshops

Between May 18th and May 29th, CTLE and CDE will be co-hosting a series of online course design workshops to help faculty design online courses for the summer.

Developing an online course is a long process and doing it in a short time can feel overwhelming. To help, these workshops are spaced over two weeks to allow faculty to design their courses along with the series. Here is what participants can expect to learn.

Workshop 1: Course Design Principles

In this opening workshop, we will cover the fundamentals of good online course design, including how to address the challenges of the online format compared to on-campus teaching, and some of the benefits of the online format for student learning that may surprise you. We will cover layout and organization of the course, ways to incorporate active and collaborative learning, and elements of course design that reduce cheating and increase deep learning.

Workshop 2: Creating Tests and Using Proctorio

The second workshop in the series will cover the fundamentals of good test design and features of Blackboard that allow for types of questions and exams that increase rigor in a course. The workshop will cover best practices and advice for using Proctorio, the electronic proctoring service for exams.

Workshop 3: Creating Discussion Boards and Assignments

Discussion boards are a mainstay of online courses, but too often students and instructors find them boring and tedious. Learn ways to use this tool to increase collaborative learning and deepen student learning in your courses. This workshop will also cover innovative assignments that are made possible by the tools within Blackboard.

Workshop 4: Communicating with Your Students

In the absence of face-to-face contact, communicating with your students is extremely important for sustaining engaging classes. Learn some of the best practices and tips for communicating with your students throughout the course to increase their participation, set clear expectations, and encourage motivation.
